Are we so constantly occupied that there is no space in our mind and heart – space both outwardly and inwardly? We need a little space, but you cannot have space physically if you are in a crowded city, or crowded in your family, crowded by all the impressions you have received, all the pressures. And psychologically there must be space – not the space that thought may imagine, not the space of isolation, not the space that divides human beings, politically, religiously, racially, not the space between continents, but an inward space that has no centre. Where there is a centre there is a periphery, there is a circumference. We are not talking of such a space.

bio

Beaded Field is a solo experimental/noise project inspired by haunting soundscapes, spiritual practice, quantum theory & foley sound design. They utilize a theremin that has been modified through effects pedals, along with distorted vocals and other ad-hoc samples, to follow psychedelic states through sound & shadow – asking you to cross the threshold into alternate states of being.

Atmospheric and dark, Beaded Field invites you to dance with themes of collective grief, despair, and unconditional reconciliation with self through the juxtaposition of looping, discordant harmonies and sustained drone.

Beaded Field is best experienced live, where their hypnotic rhythms can create temporary physical and psychological sensations that are unique to the individual.

The heart of this project is a Moog Etherwave theremin – which works through the interruption of electromagnetic fields. There are two antennas: one that controls pitch, and the other volume. Depending on the position of your hands within these fields, you can change the sound in infinite variety. There are settings on the theremin that control the size of the field (and therefore signal range), as well as waveform shape. The options are endless!

Beaded Field further manipulates this signal through an ever-evolving pedal chain, sometimes split via a 4-channel mixer, so that they can use a mic to create distorted vocal samples. Their favourite pedals to use are a combination of loopers, pitch shifters, and distortion – namely, the Pitchfork by Electro-Harmonix, Joyo’s Aquarius, a BOSS Harmonist, 3 phrase loopers, and a super-cheap dirt pedal just called “Black Rat”.
